In the review you state that you have to manually delete the pictures, but actually you can change the Hotsync properties to do this automatically.

Right-click on the Hotsync icon in the task bar, choose Custom.
Select the Palm Pix conduit and choose Change.
Click the Advanced button for the option to automatically remove the pictures from the Palm after a Hotsync.
From here you can also choose whether you want JPEG or BMP pictures.

I recently bought a palmpix for my 3xe. and I agree with the reviews. Aside from the geek factor, I got it for capturing parts and their installation for inclusion in engineering docs. and memos. Being able to keep a photo series and the memos associated with them in one place is a great idea! In trying out the camera, I found that as with any camera, keeping it steady really improves the image. I expect that is particularly true with available light situations, where the exposure may get long. I also noticed that even though I have no problem with viewing my Palm's screen when I hold it normally (horizontal), I have terrific glare when viewing it vertically. I agree that a separate view finder would be a plus (like a spotting scope for a telescope). The combination of pixelated viewfinder image and the screen glare complicates organizing the picture on the monochrome palm. On the other hand, the utility is great.

I love my kodak palmpix camera. I own a palm IIIxe , IIIe , Pilot Pro and M100. I use my camera with both my III series palm. I´m an architect and use it constantly at work at the construction site. I save so much on film developing. I have all my photos organized in my hard drive. Please kodak keep the palmpix camera simple don´t overload it with complicated stuff. I just wish there were more software for the palmpix aplication. For example a longer timer would be nice and multiple shot timer too.

Oh , one more thing , here´s a tip. If you´re not using the camera, separate it from the palm. I´ve noticed that batteries run down faster if you don´t.

Hi Julie,
Your review on the PalmPix is well done. You mention the FlashPlug as
storage device for the images. But this is rather a complicated process:
Since you cannot save single images in a specific file you must copy the
entire archive-file, rename and so on.
That is definitely a drawback of the current capture-software.

Sincerely,

One feature I don't like is that the palmpix only transforms the pics while hotsyncing. I would like to have jpegs on my palm to sync them to another pc by any third party program (by means of an terminal program e.g. so that I don't have to install the hotsync/palm desktop software on some foreign computer)

moritzhaas,

Hi, I am the one that suggested using the FlashPlug, because that's what I did while in Hawaii to ensure that I had enough space for all the pictures I took on my m100.

You are right, it is a bit inconvenient to have to do a full backup - however, after the backup is done, it becomes possible to delete all the pictures that are on your Palm and allows you to start over.

It is better than nothing, when you are away from your computer and can't hot-sync.

I was a bit disappointed in not having a case, too, so went to Target and found a Kodak Gear case that's actually for their tiniest digital camera for about $5. It is a bit larger than the PalmPix, but there's a belt loop (velcro'd, even! I like that!) The inside is smooth nylon, and there's a mesh pocket on the front for CF cards, but an extra set of AAA's fits there nicely.

This camera is really handy! I love its portability and ease-of-use! I also have the Memory Safe like Judie .. I bought it at the same time as the camera for just that purpose!

Once I got the knack of taking good pictures (e.g. keeping still, natural sunlight conditions, etc.), I went about making sure I got maximum enjoyment of the pix I took...

Here are a few tips I can offer:

1. Set your HotSynch conduit to save your images as .BMP files. These do take up more space, but this also means you have more 'raw data' to play around with if you are going to do any editing or enhancements.

Explanation: A Palmpix 640x480 image will be saved in a 72 dpi format if saved as a JPG file. This translates to approx 200k. If saved as a BMP file, it will be saved in 150 dpi (dots-per-inch) format, which will be approx 900k of disk space. This gives you DOUBLE the resolution, which is useful is you want to play around with your photo.

2. Use a desktop-based photo album/editor to store your photos, and to convert from .BMP format to e-mail or web-ready JPG files. Many are available via downloads, with prices from FREE to $100-and-over. (I use a freeware editor by Adobe, downloaded from www.activeshare.com)

Explanation: This is indispendable for organizing and retrieving your photos! Be sure to delete the original photos from your PalmPix directory on the PC so as not to store duplicate files.

3. Get a handy Palm viewer for your photos. Again, many are available via download, with prices from FREE to $20-and-over. (I use a $20 Palm OS album which I downloaded from www.splashdata.com -- it gave me the best viewing quality on my Palm IIIC)

Explanation: what use is a portable camera if you can't view pictures too? Personally, I've deleted many of my AvantGo channels to make way for my collection of photos 8-)

4. Try to get a small travel pouch for your Palm Pix, and be sure to throw in a small bag of dessicant (i.e. silicon gel) to keep the lens of your Palm Pix nice and dry.

Explanation: if you live in a humid environment as I do, there is a risk that molds will form on the lens. The dessicant reduces the risk.

Hope that helps!

Note: I do not work for any of the companies whose products are mentioned here, I'm just a satisfied user of their products!

I've been using a PalmPix with my IIIc now for several weeks. The comments about lack of a case, need for a viewfinder due to glare on Palm screen, etc. are all spot on. But the convenience of being able to snap "visual notes" with my Palm far outweighs these cons.

This is the digital equivalent of the old Instamatic cameras. If you understand that to being with, you won't be disappointed with the results.

The review for the palmpix is right on and I loved mine and how handy it was. But after about 2 months of excellent service and results it suddenly started showing the low battery icon, even with a brand new alkiline battery in place and wouldn't take pictures. I've tried new batteries, reloading the software, and it still won't work. I emailed Kodak from whom I bought it on line, describing the problem, but they only gave me a phone no. in the UK to call and didn't address the problem. Has this happened to anyone else. Does anyone know of a place in the US I can contact for repairs?

Thanks in advance.

Jimmy Stewart:

Kodak doesn't have an m125 camera yet. No, the camera for the m500 will not work with the m125. Although they use the same universial serial connector, the m500 camera is molded in such a way that it would not fit the m125.

I'm using the PalmPix with my TRGPro. I allways wanted to have some of the photos as jpeg files on the CompactFlash card. I found www.ninelocks.co.uk who make a prog called PixeMail which stores the files on the CF card, so I can send them using a mobile phone or can access the jpegs with another program called cfx.prc and a hotsync cable from any computer which has a terminal program. It's a very fine combination.

Thanks Julie...that's what I thought. Any thing in the "rumor" mill about a model coming out to support the 125?? It would be a shame not to....

I've not heard or seen anything about an m125 version, but I wouldn't think Kodak would skip over that version.

I've posted some of my good (and bad) pix here:

http://discussion.brighthand.com/palmhandhelds/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2723

examples of low light shots, candle light, etc.

Perhaps you could post your "lessons to share" also?
