Do 38xx-series Attachments on 36xx-series IPAQ? Dear Julie and Judy, I have been offered a 64MB 36xx with a POCKET PC 2002 upgrade. Will it take new attachments designed for the 38xx? |

colintan, I did test the voice recognition, and I would say that like most VR programs, it is not very accurate most of the time, unless you are in a very very quiet room. I like that this software is trainable and it seems like it would do alot more than the voice recognition software that came with the HP - if I could just get it to recognize my voice! <pout!>
If that's what you mean, I seriously doubt it. You can't use those type 3600 accessories on a 3800, and I am sure that the reverse is true, too. If that's not what you are asking, please write me back and clarify. Judie :0) [This message has been edited by Judie Clark (edited 11-04-2001).] |

Les: The serial port (which connects to the cradle) on the bottom of the 3800 is longer now. So devices such as the ThinkOutside Folding keyboard or the Pharos GPS is no incompatible. Sleeves that connect to the expansion port (which is directly behind the serial port) will work just fine with both the 3600 or 3800 series. Julie |

Great review--Just thought I'd point out that the joy pad is actually 8-way, meaning it recognizes diagonal presses as well. A good game to try this out in is Metalion from Ziosoft. |

Thanks Nik! I'll have to give Metalion a try! Judie :0) |

Awesome review easily the most comprehensive i have read to date! Have had my 3835 for over a week and it is easily the best PPC on the market! Having owned every PPC including the Jornada 568 i have to say Compaq made right all the issues i had with the 1st generation Ipaq's. |

'I cracked the case on my 3835 today, and here are some pictures of what's inside' Was this accidental or intentional? ..dino |

I still don't understand why Compaq can't do what Toshiba has done (and HP to a lesser extent) and put a CF slot in this unit. For that matter, Toshiba slips in SD and CF. Also, will there ever be the possibility of a stripped down PPC (say with SD only) in the same size/weight factor as the Palm M505? There's still nothing better shirt pocket wise. |

Thanks Judie for an excellent review (as always), especially the inside pictures. The 3835 was the Pocket PC (2002) of choice for me as well. I'm very pleased with the hardware and the software that's included is top-notch. (I'm especially pleased with the WordLogic SIP.) I would note that, when it comes to power, you can use the little power adapter that comes with the 3800 to adapt any power source that works with a 3600. (The included AC adapters are identical units, except for the little adapter thingy.) Still-and-all, I wish Compaq had come up with a way that didn't require that little thing. (It's just asking to get lost.) I also wish they'd come up with a "right-angle" adapter. The one they have now really doesn't work well with my NiteIze stand-up case. |

"It might also work with Windows XP, but not the Windows XP Professional remote access support." That is not true - I've been using my iPaq to connect to my WinXP Pro laptop via the Terminal Services client for several weeks now. - Dave |

Just thought of this - with the PC card sleeves, you can plug the AC adapter directly into the iPaq or into the sleeve's AC jack and charge both batteries either way. Will the 3800 series iPaqs still charge from the sleeve? If so, then I'm no longer as concerned about the change in the power connector - I almost always have my card sleeve on anyway. |

dino, It was absolutely intentional that I "cracked" my iPAQ's case. Cracked just means I cracked the seal. ;0) dstrauss, Russ, Dave Z, Thanks everyone, for writing! |

Dave - I will try that out right now - will post results later today! Judie :0) |

Ok - just plugged 3835 & PCMCIA sleeve in, and both charging lights came on - evidently charging in the PC or dually sleeves is an option! Judie :0) |

I read a review of the Joranda 565 and was really impressed. I've just started looking at PPC's and I'm wondering how the 565 stackes up next to this one. Can you write up a comparison of them? |
|

Oh, I forgot to ask... I really like the bit about the ViaVoice. Is that something that can be loaded on any PPC running OS 2002, or is it only for this model of Ipaq? Thanks again. |

Entropy1980: To enable remote access to your XPPro computer, right-click on "My Computer" and select properties. On the System Properties window, goto the "Remote" tab and make sure to check the box labelled "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer". Then click the "Select Remote Users..." button to, you guessed it, select which users are allowed to remotely access the computer. To connect from your PocketPC or another computer running the Terminal Services client, just run the client and enter the ip address of your XP computer. The "remote access" functionality in XP works a little differently than the Terminal Services in Win2000 or NT. On the server platforms it allows multiple users to connect simultaneously to the same computer and run independent sessions. Since XP is intended to be a desktop OS though, it only allows a single user at a time to be active on the computer - including the console. When you connect from a remote machine, it locks the screen and if you are logging in remotely as the same user who is logged into the console, the remote user takes over the console session. If you are logging in remotely as a different user though, the console session will be suspended and a new one will be started. The important thing to remember is that only one person can be active on the computer at a time. ( I should point out again that this only works on XP Professional - RDP support is not available in the Home version ) Hope this helps! Judie: Thanks for the info on charging from a sleeve - I have several adapters for my 3635, and the idea of having to scrap them all if I upgraded really bugged me. Now I'll have an even harder time choosing between a 38xx or the Casio E-200! - Dave |

Sorry if this is a dumb question but what cards can be used in the sd slot? Will it read multimedia cards (I see their much cheaper)? I'm only familiar with cf cards so I don't know anything about these new ones. Thanks |

gottawritestuff, Julie & are in the process of acquiring all of the major new Pocket PC 2002 models. As soon as we have done that, and written their respective reviews, we will most likely do a comparison of the lot. Don't worry - it is coming... Since all of the Pocket PC 2002 units have the same processor, theoretically you should be able to run this program on any of them. There may be formatting differences or problems though, from device to device. unregistered, Anyone else out there care to chime in with more info on the differences? Judie :0) |

Great review. How noticeable / different is 65,500 cols instead of the 4000 ? I'm thinking of getting the Ipaq3760 (in UK) which is PPC-02, 64 and 32MB but in the old design as far as I can see. Thanks |

I guess I'm missing something, I don't know, but there doesn't look like much of a difference between the iPaq and the HP565. Because I've just started looking at pocket pc's it's a little confusing trying to understand what seperates one from another. I like what I've read about the HP565, but your review shines well on the iPaq also. Then there are two more pocket pc's coming out in the next couple of months. So who can say what new features those may have. So then I think that I shouldn't buy one now because if I do I'll kick myself if the newer ones are really better. I guess another thing I don't understand is that it seems like everyone buys these things everytime they come out no matter how many they already have. I have a Palm IIIc. The thing I love about it is Datebk4. Nothing can hold a candle to that program that I've seen. Perhaps one of you pocket pc gurus can point to a link that talks, in english thank you, about the features mean in a pocket pc. Anyway, I'll continue to stuggle over the decision of the hp565 and the 3850 for now all the time wondering how much different the newer ones will be and what I'll be missing out on. Thanks for everyones time. |

gottawritestuff, There are some really good charts out there that show what the main features are for each of the upcoming Pocket PC's. One of these can be found at the PDABuzz site: http://www.pdabuzz.com/Features/PPC2002_Launch/comparison.html It seems to me that the only real difference in this round of PPC's is expansion. They're all the same size (pretty much), have similar screens, the same processors, etc. But the expansion options are what make them different. Toshiba, NEC and Casio have machines that have 2 slots - one for CF cards and one for SD/MMC cards. The Casio also comes with some type of USB input (not sure how useful that will be at this point) The new IPaq's have only one slot for SD/MMC cards, while the HP comes with a CF slot as well as an optional add-on battery with an MMC slot built in. In my opinion, that's the biggest difference between these new machines. And thank you to Judie for posting this review! I want a new PPC but I am going to wait until the Gadgeteer reviews all of them. |

Thanks Dan I'll check out the link you supplied. I'll have to find out what those cards are all about too. Guess that shows how new I am to all of this. |

After a six month hiatus from the PDA/Gadget scene (It’s amazing what the birth of a child can do. It almost squashed my obsessions with gadgets, almost mind you and I was using my Blackberry 950 full time) I just picked up an Ipaq 38xx. I must say after having one of the original Ipaqs, when they were first released, they keep getting better. The new design is great, including the screen protector expansion pack. I still have a few minor complaints with CE (I’ve almost always been a Palm user) but now to me it’s at least bearable. Larry |

I'm seeing complaints on other web sites about charging and battery issues as well as unexpplained slowness. Seen anything like that yet? |
|
Judie Clark unregistered |
tthiel, I have not experienced anything strange (when compared to the performance of my 3600 series) in regards to battery or charging issues - is there something specific that people are complaining about? As far as "unexplained slowness," I have seen complaints about that - and I think that almost every time the culprit has turned out to be a software issue. Julie and I both experienced it with a particular Dashboard plugin, and I had trouble with a particular game - before the developer fixed it. Otherwise, the 3800 is zippy, and I am very pleased with it. Hope that helps! |

quote: The charging issue with the 38xx is as follows: You place your Ipaq into the cradle to charge it up and the charge light does not come on. Or you place it in the cradle, it begins to charge and then the light goes out at some point. People have left their units thinking they are charging only to come back later and find their batteries down to 30% and no charge light on. There is a rather lengthy discussion on the Brighthand BB regarding this. It seems most every 38xx is effected in some way. I think only two posters out of thirty on the topic posted they hadn't had a problem like this yet. I've had it occur a few times with my unit. Nothing drastic. I just had to remove the unit and replace it in the cradle a few times before the charge light engaged. It seems like there is some problem with the new charger connection. Although this problem is not limitted to the cradle as people have also had the problem when connected only to the AC adapter. Larry |

Larry, I guess I am one of the lucky ones - I have not had any issues like those that you described. I almost wish I had - just so I would have been more knowledgeable about the issue. My main problem, as mentioned in the review, is the occasional "hanging" of my system. Removing and reinserting the SD card seems to cure that issue, though. Weird stuff... quote: You're definitely lucky not to have the problem. However, some posters reported the issue starting after a few weeks of using the unit. This caused them major issues because their fourteen day return policy had expired and they were unable to exchange their units at their original point of purchase. Most had to call Compaq directly to request and exchange. Knock on wood my unit hasn't done it since the second day I had it. It's been fine ever since. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Larry |
