Great review Julie and Judie! So many gadgets! I wish I was there... . About the 1gb cards, just under $800?!?! 512mb Type 1 cards go for $200-300 now...I would just buy two of those!...Anyway, So, you didn't go into much detail about the Ipaq accesories you saw...what did you see? I want to see what new gadgets are coming up for my Ipaq!

Great job as always, you two!!! One item of note: I could be wrong, but I think your link to DS International is wrong.

Thanks for the (cool) report, both of you.

Was that Clie DSI Case all metal? They advertised for the longest time that it was until we recevied our cases that had aluminum fronts and plastic backs.

There were some problems with the first release of this case. It was so bad that they are shipping everyone who ordered pre-christmas free replacements. The latch was bad and you couldnt get to the stylus.

kstedman:

I thought the case was all metal... But I didn't handle it much at all. Judie, do remember?

I still have their business card. I need to follow up about review samples, so I'll see what I can dig up.

Hmmmm, I thought the case was all metal, too.

Hopefully we will get a sample, and then we can answer the question definitively.

FYI: Blue Man Group also has shows in NYC, Boston and Chicago. The three guys that appear in the Intel commercials are the three original Blue Men from New York, and also the owners of the company. Think of it as anti-performance-art. They also have a CD out which is pretty cool.

disclaimer: although once employed by them as a contractor several years ago, I don't work for them now... just a fan. :-)

Apparantly, the rear has to be plastic due to the shape of the Clie. I should receive my replacement this week and I will e-mail you two my findings.

You guys (whoops, gals) are the best- I always enjoy your she-said/she-said articles the most! Keep up the great work.

I don't think I have to remind you Julie that the record companies may not like your statements about taking mp3s off of Judie's laptop- that is unless they were for CD's you already owned

Thanks for the great article.

Does DS International plan on offering a case for the 3800 series Ipaq soon? You mentioned that you wanted one for your 3800 and I was wondering if they had one ready or nearly ready for release.

Great review, thanks!

One word of caution... becareful when attempting to take pictures in a casino, security tends to frown on that. I'd hate to see them confiscate your digital camera over that.

dhaupert: ummmm....since I own all the CDs the song's were from, let's just say I loaned the CDs to my best friend...

Tranestopper: We actually saw the 3800 case (which I tried to get them to give me, believe me), but it was a prototype - soon to be released, though.

Michael Kizer: I did not know it might be a problem to take pics in a casino. I would have died had they confiscated my new Olympus. Glad we didn't get busted!

"On the way to the convention center, we were asked if we were there for the "convention". We said yes, thinking CES would be the only one - little did we know that there was also a PORN convention in town that week also..."

I can just imagine the conversation...

Guy: (eyeing two attractive women together) "Are you here for the convention?"

J: "Yes, we run a website and we're gathering information for it."

G: (leering) "What kind of website?"

J: "Oh, mostly adult toys, we take photos and give detailed hands-on reviews."

G: (can't believe his luck) "So, what's your favorite toy?"

J: "Oh, the Casio E-200."

G: (wanders away confused)

But I loved your scenario!

Hi gals!
I bet you had a great time, judging from the gadgets, photos and witty comments! I wish they had more of those shows in central Europe :-(
Two questions for the both of you:
SD/MMC cards, were there any specifics on 128 and 256 megs cards coming out in the immediate future? I need them for my Sony's mp3 hunger :-)
iPaq: Yesterday I noticed a local computer seller, had in their brand new catalog, an iPaq jacket, with a combined: GSM phone/ email/sms unit that was on stock and ready for sale (forget the price, even if I had an iPaq I couldn't buy it right now - also way too bulky) any news or comments on this? Did you see one at CES?
Thanks for a cool CES report!

Keep on keeping on [!] with your great site!

Gageteers,

I enjoyed your CES review/s! It was a fresh look at the CES show which I LOVE to attend every year for R&R. IT ROCKS! BTW: There is also a CES in June on the east coast but it is not nearly the same magnitude as the Vegas show.

One of the niceties of January CES is that if you ask the right people at small-shop booths (engineers, not the eye candy ), sometimes they will SELL you there toys at heavily-discounted prices. You have to catch them on the last day because it makes their life easier when returning home carrying less stuff.

One such booth was the DSI Case booth where I managed to get the demo-engineer to sell me the new titanium IPAQ 35xx metal case. This case is SOOO cool because I can now protect my Ipaq screen while having a full-size sleeve still inserted. Most other IPAQ cases I have seen use the sleeve-area or other connection which limits the ability to connect a sleeve of your own. Unfortunately, I can't use my stowaway with the case on.. Can't have it all I suppose.

Speaking of freebies, did you get a chance to catch the free Coffee and Import Beer in the North halls (2nd floor). I was waiting for someone to fall over drunk.

Not sure if you noticed, but Dataplay had a terrible showing this year (non-existent), I did get the Imation engineer to show my the final production Dataplay reader/writer. I believe that this optical unit will eventually fit into a PCMCIA type 3 slot. I told him I would take the plunge of they made their media re-write able and loosened the copy protections.

Some review questions answered:

Fall Comdex is bigger (210,000 people) but sometimes too big. This CES show was about a quarter smaller than previous years given the unfortunate WTC events of a few months ago and also because the Adult section was separated. (located in the Sands Conv center). (It actually used to be PART of the show (with free admittance)). CES separated it because crowds of techno-geeks would enter the adult exhibits at 9am and not leave till closing, which forced the fire marshals to close up early on several occasions.

Interesting events and Information:

Gageteers, during my stay at the Luxor hotel, I did notice the $59 rates after CES?!?! I managed to stay the entire weekend and enjoy some other cool things around the hotels! FYI: If you get a west-wing room, you can see the CES bus stop from your room and leave just in time to catch the bus in the morning.

Good places to eat if you are at the show! After the first year, I found that there was a small PizzaHut in the far end of the Hilton. The food is good and there are no lines before 11am (unlike the horrendous lines to eat at the buffets near the show).

If you happen to be strolling to the Hilton throughout the show, don't forget to visit the StarTrek Experience ride/stores in the Hilton! I love going there every year!

Best Buffets: With all the mega-resorts going up, it gets harder to pick the best buffets. The selections of food are incredible at all the buffets, but the best buffets have to be the Paris and the Bellagio. You won't be disappointed and you get a discount of you hit it before 5pm.

Across form the New York, New York Hotel you will find the One-of-a-Kind M&M store.. very cool.. Free 3-d movie on the 3rd floor..

Some other shows you may want to peek at are:

German Electronics Show
HIFI in NY
JES Japan Electronics Show
Gartner Group Symposium in Orlando
and Fall COMDEX.

On my above questions on the subject of SD/MMC cards, I meant my Siemens SL45 GSM phone for the SD/MMC cards (it reads and plays mp3 files while being a GSM phone with the use of SD/MMC cards) and not the Sony Clié of...silly me... ;-)
But while I am at it, have you heard anything while at the CES on larger Memory Sticks in the immediate future...for the Clié? 256mb...512mb maybe...:-) ?

Great review, girls!

Also, thanks for the tip on the Rhinoskin price drops!

Are either of you two going to PalmSource next month (San Jose, CA)?

Hi,
just read the article on the CES... Great to read it...

Anyway, just wanted to let u know that the "weird little car" that Judie was sitting in: it's called a Smart...

Over here in the Netherlands (where I'm from), these cars drive all over the highway. They're mostly used by pizza-delivery guys, or semi-yuppies

All times are PT (US)
