I agree with you 101% that PI 3.0 is a GREAT program. I have been using ActionNames during my Palm M505 days and felt the need to find something similar to it when I switched to PPC. PI 3 gives me the features in ActionNames and so much more. Now, if only I can find a PPC software like QuickBudget(another favorite Palm OS software)!

Judie, what is your impression of the latest version of PI3 versus Datebk4 independent of platform? (Pocket PC vs Palm OS) It looked like it was using Datebk4 as a template at one point, but now it seems to have branched out into some great other directions. It doesn't seem to be as complex as Datebk4 though.

munch,

Completely independednt of platform I would have to say that PI3 offers more, because it does "branch out" into those other directions.

I would not say that Datebk4 was more complex though...not by a long shot. If you have a PPC, you ought to download the trial and see what you think.

Thanks for your review Judie.

Indeed I missed dateBook since I stepped over from my Palm to my iPaq.

Indeed my Task-screen is cluttered and in fact not usuable anymore.

You're right, this app is a must have!

Judie, great review of PI3. I'm also a big fan (and beta tester)

Just a tip, since you don't use start/due dates in Tasks View, you can make your task list *much* cleaner looking by:

From Tasks, click on the task list icon 2nd from the right. Select "View" menu and toggle "Show Due Date" and "Show Start Date" both to *off*.

There, now you won't have the [.-.] showing for every item in Task view now. Or if you are only concerned about Due date (like I am) then just turn off "Show Start Date"... Either way, it's much cleaner than what PI3 defaults to (if you find you don't need to see those dates)

Hope this helps!

Kamen,

Thanks for the tip - I actually have SOME tasks that I sort by due date, so I had left that feature on...but it does look much cleaner without. ;0)

I liked your article, but I had to take Pi off my pc. The program deleted a contact after I opened it up. Don't know how, but it did at a bad time. I didn't like the contact listings also, couldn't get to all the contacts just a few of them would show up. Might have been just operator problems. didn't keep it on long enough to get used to it because of the deletion.

Great Review........ I have been using PI since the beginning and find it a must have!
But my alarm notes in PI don't seem to show up on my desktop outlook like you said they do? Any idea why?

ikesler,

After writing a note you have to tap on its name in the list, hit "save as", name it, pick a folder, and then you will see it show up in Outlook.

Hope that helped!

What toolbar did you use in the evaluation report - is this wisbar or gigabar?
Running trial now, and it looks great - did try AgendaFusion for a few days - this does look much better and fast.
Thanks.

I just upgraded from an HP 548 to the 568 and was thrilled with the new speed and GUI. I waited a day before reinstalling PI because I hadn't upgraded yet and didn't want to have to learn to use the PPC while also learing all the new features of PI3. Well, as you know, add-ons are a necessity for true PDA efficiency and your article tipped me toward just goin' for it. Glad I did - lots of new and useful features that make my gadget an integrated PIM and not just seperate components.

One thing though, there was once a PIM called Ecco that fell by the wayside and it's the standard I'm REALLY looking for in a desktop/PDA program. Til then, this is better than great.

Oh, yeah, one question about the Wisbar - have you ever compared it to Gigabar. I'm using Gigabar right now almost exclusively for its 'close' feature (oh, puleeze spare me the task switcher!). When I went to the wisbar site, it was kinda scary - NO DETAILS and a note saying the developer was busy.

So, how long have you used Wisbar and what does it do to aid PI3?

Thanks,
Msgadget

Msgadget,

Wisbar does include an option to close apps.

I wouldn't say that Wisbar specifically aids PI3, it just aids in the overall Pocket PC experience. I like it because it adds the date/time and the memory/battery status to the top of every screen...plus it has a great task switcher built in.

Does PI3 add REPEATING alarms or do I have to get another 3rd party app along with this (i.e. SuperAlert)?

Kurt - I am not sure about repeating alarms, but I would think you could set a repeating event that has an attached alarm, and that would work.

Hercules - I am using Wisbar, which is why my "top bar" looks so different.

Based on the review I upgraded from PI 2.6 to 3.02. I do like the new interface and features, but on my Jornada 548 I find 3.02 slower than 2.6. After adding appointments, tasks, or contacts, update times are 5 to 10 seconds. I had a noticable delay with 2.6, but not this long. Is it my hardware? Or should I reinstall?

Ken,

Unfortunately the 548 has a notoriously slow processor. I was basing my review on the new Pocket PC 2002 devices with their StrongARM processors. Sorry if there wa any confusion...

Because v2 would search the note section I used to use Notes as a user defined field and find contacts that meet certain criteria.
V3 does not do this so in turn I've had to set up different categories instead - the down side is I'm now into 50+ categories which can take a while to scroll thru when setting up a new contact.
The sooner the developers get the search facility operating on the Notes area the better.
This and the fact one can't set up their own User Defined Fields is the only gripe I have about an overall top application.

Cheers

hi,
i also transitioned from the palm os to pocket pc 2002 this year. unlike you, i found the palm os pim to be good, and i did use datebook 4, with HEAVY use of icons to help manage my month view.

i am currently using the pocket informant 3 demo, my only complaint, which is major, is that it takes SEVEN SECONDS to switch month views.

this is not acceptable. I intend on going back to the palm os with palm os 5.

currently using the compaq 3870..

any comments on speed issues going month to month.

You don't mention whether you can use this software with Outlook still on your desktop. Do I have to remove Outlook to use Informant?

Well, I guess it's obvious that I like PI better - but then there are people that like AF better. I think the best thing for you to do would be to download the trial software for each, and see which one "fits" you better.
