Regarding the limitation of being unable to power the DVD player in a car, couldn't you simply get one of those cig lighter adapters that outputs AC power? Surely the wattage of the player is fairly small.... Seems a pretty basic 'gadget' for a gadgeteer to own. |

Toolman, Actually, I don't have a coverter already. But even if I did, I'd still think the PSYC should have come with one. Judie :0) [This message has been edited by Judie (edited 07-08-2002).] |

I saw this device when you had it posted in the side-bar. It brought up a question right away that unforunatly your review didn't completely dispell. You mention that the device will play MP3s from CD-R/RW but what about DVD-RW or similar writable DVD media? Where I certainly have more MP3s then a simple CD I could fit all of them onto a DVD! If this decive isn't able to do this, is there one that is? Anyone? |

It's smaller than a standard DVD player, but if it's positioned as portable, it seems to miss the mark - there are DVD players about the size of a portable CD player, and this one is huge in comparison. |

I think it's pretty cool -- sure it's not one of those "portable" battery powered ones, but for $150 to have something that looks sleek, plays DVD and MP3, and can easily be toted from one room to the next, I think it's a good deal. One question though: there are extra ports on the side that resemble S-Video -- is that what they're for? |

I saw this device advertised in my local Best Buy flyer last weekend and scooted down to my neighborhood superstore to pick one up. I was unpleasantly surprised to discover how big it is - the picture made it like a slight oversized portable CD player and totally obscured its wedge shape (see side view in Julie's review). As a result, I'm waiting for another manufacturer to come up with something truly portable - sized like a CD player with a long-playing battery that I can drop in a briefcase with a multiheaded cable and a 12-pack softsided CD/DVD holder. In fact, such a thing may be close at hand - just about any of the current generation of portable DVD players - the ones with the clamshell design with the drive and batteries in the lower half and the display in the upper half - would fit my needs if it could be manufactured without the display. ChrisCook - The sony site states that the PSYC will do DVD-R/DVD+RW and DVD-RW (Video Mode) Playback. I did not have a disc in this format to try, so I could not test it. Tuttle - The extra ports on the side are for S-Video Out. Judie :0) |

[QUOTE]Originally posted by Jon Austin: up. I was unpleasantly surprised to discover how big it is - the picture made it like a slight oversized portable CD player and totally obscured its wedge shape (see I totally agree.. the stores selling this unit (best buy and others) and even a few articles in "twice" magazine all showed a significantly smaller device. This was truly disappointing. But, alas, 149 is a steal, but not for long! I foresee many manufacturer's stripping away their LCDs (most of the cost) from there portables.. can't get any bigger than samsung's 10 inch to truly stay portable. You can now get a pair of awesome SONY glasstrons on ebay for under $150.. Portable movie screen, here I come!! Fabian. |

Here's one alternative - a little more expensive, but truly portable. http://www.thebestthings.com/electronics/dvd_pv40.htm |

It's Sony so I like it... What I would like to know is: This question my sound bizarre but I love listening to movies while driving and like I wouldn't have to copy the soundtrack to a CD. Can anybody help? |

I post it again as I have forgotten quite a few words... It's Sony so I like it... This question may sound bizarre but I love listening to movies while driving and like that I wouldn't have to copy the soundtrack to a CD. Can anybody help? |

yago, I don't know why you couln't, you would just be plugging in the audio - not the visual cables. Judie :0) |

Anyone here try the Sony DVP-F21 (retail $300)? It stands up like the Playstation 2 and looks to be a better quality unit. http://electronics.cnet.com/electronics/0-6342369-1305-7543733.html |

I got this player, but was unable to use it with the hotel tv set in the hotel room I stayed in. The TV was apparently "locked". Is it possible to bypass this? |

So is the Sony DVP-PQ1 PSYC DVD Player able to play DVD-Rs loaded with MP3s? Their website says in specifications "DVD-RW (Video Mode) Playback" and mentions nothing of the DVD-R/DVD+RW playback it says in the overview.... |

Terrence, I got the specs I mentioned in the review either from the Sony website, or directly from the package insert that came with the PSYC. Judie :0) [This message has been edited by Judie (edited 10-26-2002).] |

When I first saw this machine in a Spiegel catalogue, it said that one could download other cover designs from sony.com/psyc. But I can't find anywhere on the Sony website that has other cover designs. Does anyone know where these are, or if they even exist? ------------------ |

My only thought is wouldn't it have been nice if the player also had a Memory Stick Slot for MP3's instead of just the CDR's that use so much power. Rich rprzybylski@msn.com quote: |

About playing MP3's from a DVD-R. I can't say for sure for this particular player, but I know this isn't possible with most DVD players that do MP3. That's because when these players recognize that a DVD disc has been inserted, they go into DVD video mode. |
