There's a major "con" to the camera you didn't mention: it's not Macintosh compatible. I downnloaded the ".cmf" movie you posted on your site and then downloaded the latest Media Player from Microsoft. It wouldn't play the .cmf file at all; "Invalid URL." You need to warn Macintosh users against buying this product if they can't use the files it creates. You also need to warn potential buyers that their files are not cross-platform compatible. And finally, you need to chastize Casio for creating their own proprietary format, when there are plenty of perfectly viable formats already out there they could have used. Ever heard of MPEG?? Hello?

Also, is this Casio-specific, or does it work at all in other CF-port devices, like the TRGpro, the Psion, or a normal laptop with a pcmcia->cf adaptor?

I agree with the other posters, we really need to see the larger format images so we can determine for ourselves their quality rather than having to rely on your say-so. After all, the usefulness or otherwise of a digital camera is reliant on the quality of the images it produces, and it is a very easy thing to demonstrate given that all you need do is put some sample pictures on your review page!

Is it just me or do other people see a big problem with all of these great CF devices (cameras and modems). You can not use your CF card when using the CF devices. This means you can not store images or even the software that is needed to run the devices such as modem software on your CF card. Plus you have to swap cards and devices when you want to use one or the other. space may not be a big deal on a 32mg machine but may be on a 16mg or smaller machine. Does anyone make hardware that includes a CF slot in it so that both can be accessed at the same time. Just a thought may not be possible.
P.S. Great review of a cool product.

Julie- Why wouldn't it work on a Casio E-15? I know you wouldn't see anything in color, but wouldn't the image be in color once you get it to the desktop? Has anyone tried this?

Also, for those wanting a comparison to regular digital photos, there are some images of the same shots taken with the Casio Camera and with a regular digital camera for comparison at the following site:

Does anyone know where I can download the English version of the Casio Camera Card software? I only have the Japanese software and it does not work on my English Casiopea.

Hi Julie,

People have reported that the camera card itself contains memory to store images. Do you still have the camera to confirm this? And how many pictures can you store on it?

TIA

Pictures are not stored on the camera card. They are stored on the PDA.

Julie, I have both a Casio E115 and a Palm V. How would you compare the Compact Flash JK710DC with the Kodak PalmPix Camera given only 2MB on my Palm and lack of color?

I can't compare the Kodak camera with the Casio CF camera because I have never seen or tried the Kodak camera yet.

Is there a camera for the E-100/105 that connects to the serial port? Is this even possible? (Is the serial port fast enough to handle movies?)

Julie:
One comment about the proprietary CMF format that the 710DC outputs, it is actually a derivative of MPEG-1, or MPG. For windows users, changing the extension to .mpg should allow a playback of the video portion of the CMF files. Thus, the MACies can view the CMF files too. I think that the audio may be screwed up though.

Julie, thanks for this -- but I noticed a much crisper image when you took the outdoors photo (although smaller) of your dog, compared with the low-light indoors shot. Can you give us an idea of what image quality is possible outdoors in good lighting at the 640 x 480 resolution? Thanks in advance, I hope!

Are there any two-slot piggyback solutions, so that both the camera and the compact flash card can be used together?

I'll try to get add a 640x480 outside shot sometime this week. I have to dig out the camera and the software and reinstall it on my E-115.

As for the two-slot solution, there isn't any that I know of.

Julie have you found a way to convert the .cmf video to mpeg. Or even a way to extract the sound out of it. Then use premiere to put it back together.

Thanks.

Hi!
Is there any possibility to convert .cmf to any other format (mpg)?

I need help! I've bought the JK-710DC camera from someone who lost the driver software and I used the version 1.10.23 from the casio site and to my horror it looked nothing like the pics on Julie's review.
Does anyone know what went wrong? The pics looked like 256 colors. Does anyone know where to download a driver that can make it work?

GREAT review. I am considering purchasing this (now that you can get cheaper) and your review was the best one so far. Thanx!
I am concerned about the dog in the pictures though.....
What did you do? Chop his poor little legs off?
Poor little doggy! :-)
