So I'm guessing that since the port speed is set at 57,600, this USB adapter doesn't really utilize the speed benefits of USB? Seems like $39 is an awful lot to pay for another slow com port.

There's too much to think about. If you had a Mac, it's as simple as popping the CD in and installing small things. I didn't even have to restart. The Keyspan USB adapter is another option in the sync control program when it's plugged in. And when it's plugged in, it defaults to that.

I've never had speed issues and I have it set to "as fast as possible" It is pretty slow, a little slower than IR, but it works.

$39 is a bit expensive but this one works much better than Palm's own USB cradle, there's lots of reports of problems with that. But the issue here seems to be with windows and not the device itself.

For the response questioning speed, the USB connector can only go as fast as the shortest link in the chain. When you convert a product initially designed to plug into a serial port, you can only go as fast as the serial port because that's how fast the hardware in the product is capable of. Get it?

I have a handful of devices that each feel they are priviledged enough to take up my serial port. In fact, because I've had to swap out devices so much, my serial port is broken on my desktop. It's one of those that's built onto the motherboard, so I'd have to buy a card to add another serial port, as my warranty has expired on this computer. Transferring files to my laptop is a pain, and it doesn't always connect to my network properly, so programs like AvantGo can't download content.

I tried to order the Palm USB kit last Monday. The order went through, and the screen said it would be shipped immediately, as the product was in stock. I checked the webssite on the following day, and it said that the product was backordered but would be shipped on the 6th. I called today, the 10th, and 3Com says they *expect* them in stock on the 15th.

I remembered Julie's review so I found distributors of Keyspan products. Micro something's web site says the product is in stock, but I called to verify that, and they said that they are out but are expecting some in any day now. Outpost's web site says they are out of stock, so I called Outpost to verify and they said they got some in this afternoon.

In other words, I'll get the Keyspan adapter from Outpost with free overnight shipping and no tax. This comes out to mean that I'll pay about $10 less than the total from 3Com and I'll get the product sooner.

JN says there's lots of reports of problems with Palm's USB kit. That's news to me. Most of the deja.com posts say how well the Palm USB kit works and the included Palm-specific CD makes set-up a breeze. Keyspan does not have Palm-specific software.

Keyspan does not need any software other than the drivers. The "palm specific software" that comes with the palm unit is merely the freely downloadable mac pack software from palm.

I ran into a major problem witht he Keyspan USB/Serial cable. My new laptop only has a USB port so I am unable to run some programs that I had planned (GPS etc). The Keyspan looked like a solution, however my laptop came with Win2000 and Keyspan does not have drivers for it. So now unless I go out and by Win98 I am stuck with a cable that is useless.
