For the response questioning speed, the USB connector can only go as fast as the shortest link in the chain. When you convert a product initially designed to plug into a serial port, you can only go as fast as the serial port because that's how fast the hardware in the product is capable of. Get it?I have a handful of devices that each feel they are priviledged enough to take up my serial port. In fact, because I've had to swap out devices so much, my serial port is broken on my desktop. It's one of those that's built onto the motherboard, so I'd have to buy a card to add another serial port, as my warranty has expired on this computer. Transferring files to my laptop is a pain, and it doesn't always connect to my network properly, so programs like AvantGo can't download content.
I tried to order the Palm USB kit last Monday. The order went through, and the screen said it would be shipped immediately, as the product was in stock. I checked the webssite on the following day, and it said that the product was backordered but would be shipped on the 6th. I called today, the 10th, and 3Com says they *expect* them in stock on the 15th.
I remembered Julie's review so I found distributors of Keyspan products. Micro something's web site says the product is in stock, but I called to verify that, and they said that they are out but are expecting some in any day now. Outpost's web site says they are out of stock, so I called Outpost to verify and they said they got some in this afternoon.
In other words, I'll get the Keyspan adapter from Outpost with free overnight shipping and no tax. This comes out to mean that I'll pay about $10 less than the total from 3Com and I'll get the product sooner.
