Why would anybody create a case with magnetic closure? It would wipe the memory of the Palm, wouldn't it? |

According to Julie's review of the Ondata case (http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/ondata-review.html) it's not a problem. Don't ask me why not--I'm not a scientist or an engineer. I do like the idea of a magnetic closure like that, though--simple, effective, but with no obvious "stuff" like velcro, snaps, zippers, etc. If someone can provide a more detailed explanation of why it's not an issue, please do. |

According to one my close friends (who is an electronics guru), magnets won't harm a PalmPilot. It's not like a floppy disk. I'll try to get a detailed explanation and post it here. |

Data stored on a medium such as a floppy disk (or a cassette tape or videotape) store information by using a strong magnet to change the orientation of particles on the surface of the disk (or tape). Think back to your elementary science classes and the experiments conducted with magnets and iron filings, and you'll get the idea. Because they use magnetic means to store data, they can be susceptible to data loss if placed near a magnetic source that is strong enough to reorient the particles. This takes a pretty strong magnet -OR- very close proximity to a weaker one. The Palm units don't have floppy disks or tapes inside them; they store data inside silicon chips, using electricity. So a magnet can't hurt the data in your Palm unit. Cheers, |

Here's some more info on magnets: Very powerful magnets WILL harm it, but the memory is electronic, and to get an electron flow, you need a moving magnetic field, |

I have considered magnetic closures for some time and still cannot justify them. Yes, I agree they are nice and I would actually like them. My theory is... Even though the magnets may not harm the Palm device, Any problems that occour while the Palm is in the case will be blamed on the magnetic closures. I would prefer to keep it safe for now. I will keep magnetic closures in mind. |

Do you have any contact information for PDALife other than their URL? The webpage provides no further info, other than the ability to submit orders, the email address for the page-creator. It seems sort of irresponsible to promote the purchase of products from a business which seems to hide its identity, address and telephone number. I understand that you are merely reviewing the product, but since that also elicits sales for the company, you should require some disclosure by the makers of the products you accept for review. Reputable companies do not hide behind their webpages. |

gmerin: I assure you that PalmLife is a reputable company. Tim Warner will reply to your emails if you send them. His email address should be on the PalmLife site. Julie |

The review mentioned that the Palm V with OmniSky modem would fit in the HandiPak; however, the photo with the Palm V sticking out of the case seems to appear as if there would not be room for the antenna. Just looking for confirmation that it fits well before I decide whether to purchase. |

Tim Warner who designed the case, did so with the Omnisky in mind. So yes, it fits. Julie |

Julie, Great review and pics. Can you add in 1 more picture? A view of the unit from the end, hooked onto a transparent belt. If you can add a Palm to see the sag. This will give potential buyers how it looked like in real use. I have one of the early generation of leather cases. It was so very badly designed. The clip was sewned on the outer skin of case, instead of the internal stiffener. After a few weeks, the whole thing is flapping around. Every time I run I have to hold on to it. |

Well, I bought the Handipack case (natural color) and it is great!!! No sag whatsoever with the PalmIIIx inside. The case is really well-made and I got a lot of "Where did you get that cool case?" from my fellow physicians. ------------------ |

The company that makes the handipak should provide some sort of equipment warranty like UPS manufacturers do, that would do a lot to allay people's concerns. If the manufacturer is sure the product can't cause any harm then they should be prepared to offer this because they don't have any risk. They should of course include a disclaimer to say that if the damage is not due to the product, the owner of the computer becomes liable for costs incurred. |
